Came across this book at the library as I was checking out other mind/body books.
If you are in pain and tired of the usual NSAIDS, physical therapy, etc. which do not work for you, read this book and apply it. Stress and how it affects the body is finally newsworthy; many physical conditions are explored in this book and are healed when applying these principles. Yes, it takes work and isn't as easy as taking a pill. But it's so worth having your life back without pain. I also like that Dr. Brady acknowledges the spiritual factor with the mind & body. Some may not care for that.
Are you a perfectionist? People-pleaser? One who does not show emotion and just "stuffs" everything? Yes, your personality can be causing your pain. Examining your life and doing some in-depth writing about yourself and situations is very relieving. The book has very good questions to ponder for self-examination. What do you have to lose but some emotional trash you've carried around--and your pain?
If you apply it, it will work for you too. It is time for people to embrace the mind and body together and stop treating them separately. Emotional health really does equal physical health. Oh, did I mention the high success rate from using this method?
There is a 20/20 clip where John Stossel explains this method and has himself been healed of chronic back pain by using the same principles.
True, it is not widely believed that our emotions can cause us physical pain; I do hope this type of information will get "out there" so more people will be able to be healed and enjoy their life. Those who learn about this and have it work wonders for them will want to shout it from the rooftops (like me).
I do realize that not everyone will accept that their emotions cause physical pain; we are very conditioned with the medical (physical) mindset. You can change that if you want to.

Buy it here now!

Recrafting a Life: Coping with Chronic Illness and Pain

Second author, Denise Webster, is with Univ. of Colorado, Denver. It also contains a great deal of information for the medically sophisticated patient or caregiver as well as certain topics that would be best understood by medical professionals or very medically sophisticated laymen such as medico-legal attorneys.

The people that will benefit most from this book will be patients and family members. This book puts complicated medical thought processes into simple, understandable terms. Few physicians or patients understand what happens when patients are referred to a "Pain Specialist". This book will help to teach basic concepts of pain management to Physicians, Nurses, Podiatrists, Dentists, Chiropractors and other allied health professionals. This book is not intended to make "Pain Specialists" out of these groups, but it can help them to understand what we do and why we do it.

This book contains frank discussions of the most common complaints that a pain practitioner sees and treats. It walks the reader through symptoms, etiology (cause), diagnostic steps and treatment approaches. It also addresses a multitude of misconceptions and myths associated with painful conditions and pain management. The format is unique in that it is written primarily for pain patients and their caregivers, and yet it contains enough detail to keep the interest of medical professionals and sophisticated laymen.

Buy it here now!

Performance without Pain: A Step-by-Step Nutritional Program for Healing Pain, Inflammation and Chronic Ailments in Musicians, Athletes, Dancers. . . and Everyone Else

"The proof is in the pudding," as the saying goes. My wife and I both follow Ms. Pirtle's dietary suggestions with excellent results. Well, actually my wife suffers with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), and has to eat much less dairy food than I do. But, there are many things about Pirtle's suggestions that are working for her, too.

The main point to grasp is that each person must experiment to find what works for his or her metabolic type. Ratios, portions, how often per week, etc. are also as important as what one digests. Anyone who balks at giving this diet the "college try" has obviously not suffered enough - yet. That person may also have a spouse who enjoys so large an annual income, and therefore does not need to be concerned about being physically non-functional. You show me a person who makes a living, and supports a family, as a musician, typist, computer operator, seamstress, tailor, and anyone who works with his or her hands, and who has debilitating (or chronically annoying) pain in his or her hands, arms, elbows, shoulders or back, and I'll show you a person is willing to try this - and anything else.

When one eventually tires of going to a doctor, getting another prescription that is frightening for its acknowledged, potential damage to ones liver, kidneys, gut and heart, Pirtle's suggestions may look a lot more promising and appealing.

To those who fear that they will develop a high bad cholesterol count, on a diet such as she suggests, I offer the following personal anecdote. Someone would have to explain to me why it is that, years ago, when I went on the extreme first two week regimen of the Dr. Atkins diet, my bad cholesterol level dropped like a rock. It was so low, that my physician laughed with glee over my lab report. He, who for so long was dead set against the Atkins diet, finally read Atkins' books. When he called, to give me the lab report, he said, "You are obviously addicted and allergic to carbos. What you crave most is what you are allergic to." During the first two weeks, I ate 3 eggs and 3 sausages every morning. For lunch and supper I ate double portions of red meat, lamb, pork, bacon, chicken, or fish. In between meals I ate lots of salami, prosciutto (Italian ham), and cheese. Water was my only beverage!. I ate and drank enough (water) to fill my stomach to satisfaction, and my cholesterol went way, way down into the "no risk at all" level. Following that two week period, if I were to introduce ANY grains, or even one slice of bread, my weight would increase and my bad cholesterol would increase. I could eat greens with no bad effect, even though they contain some carbohydrates. I know this for a fact because I was tested again. Now, some physician would have to explain why this is so. Meanwhile, I am not worried about Ms. Pirtle's dairy and meat-heavy dietary suggestions. I only suggest that one eat grass-fed beef , organically grown vegetables, and the dairy products as suggested by Ms. Pirtle.

Another side effect of my all protein diet was that I stopped snoring altogether, I needed about 2 hours less sleep, I felt like I was 18 years old again, and I lost all craving for pasta, raviolis, pierogis, lasagna, cake, bread and doughnuts. I could look at that stuff and turn away from it, whereas prior to that I had a "monkey on my back" that made me feel as though "I must eat some starch RIGHT NOW, or else I will lose my mind." This is precisely why I am grateful to Ms. Pirtle for writing her book; I have much the same experience on her suggested diet.

As far as "leaky gut" is concerned, anyone who suffers from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) would do themselves a favor by reading A New IBS Solution, by author Mark Pimentel, MD. Its sub-title is Bacteria - the missing link in treating irritable bowel syndrome. Ms. Pirtle's suggestions center on this need for good bacteria; bacteria that has not been cooked and processed out of our food. We are still following the high-density, nutritional recipes that she suggests in her book can only say that we do very well on them. We are undaunted by the fact that the recipes are more time-consuming than those of the "normal" American diet; we base our convictions upon results that keep us working and playing (sports) without pain or discomfort.

Buy it here now!

Pain Free 1-2-3: A Proven Program for Eliminating Chronic Pain Now

This is a fabulous book written by a physician who also was stricken with fibromyalgia and has devoted his life to uncover ways to improve quality of life living with and overcoming fibromyalgia. The information about how doctors do things gives more confidence when dealing with the medical profession which can be very hard at times. Doctors become very nervous when they cannot put things into little boxes and give solutions to problems which leads to the pain sufferer being pushed out into the cold sometimes. Recent experience has shown that attitudes within the medical profession are changing and doctors are opening up to new methods of pain treatment that give the patient more hope for the future. No doubt books like this have played a significant part in this change of attitude.

Buy it here now!

Effortless Pain Relief: A Guide to Self-Healing from Chronic Pain

Effortless Pain Relief is both an unusual and a really important book. It has a revolutionary and very effective approach to helping you heal yourself from chronic pain - back, neck or shoulder pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, etc. Its core idea is that chronic pain, no matter what its original cause, always involves muscle tension, and that letting go of the tension is letting go of the pain. The idea that muscular tension is the source of pain is not in itself that new. John Sarno, for example, in his book Mind Over Back Pain, holds to that view. But John Sarno's solution is just to ask you to figure out what problem in your life is causing the tension, and then you will feel better. That works sometimes, but a lot of times it doesn't. What if the source of the tension is unconscious? What if the source of the tension is the way we stand, breathe, or walk? Or what if the source of the tension comes from misalignment due to an accident? In each case, the author of Effortless Pain Relief gives you lots of tools for releasing tension in your body. Some of those tools involve changing the way you breathe. Some involve changing the way you stand, sit, or walk. Some involve learning how to identify and release habits of pushing through life that so many of us have. And some involve learning how to recognize unconscious emotional blocks. Ingrid Bacci does it all. She shows us how to let go of whatever is causing our pain. She shows you how to heal yourself. That's a great gift.

Buy it here now!

The Rider's Pain-Free Back: Overcome Chronic Soreness, Injury and Aging, and Stay in the Saddle for Years to Come

I purchased this book sight unseen and really did not expect it to be as substantive as it is. The author is extremely knowledgeable about both riding and rider's back problems. Prevention is worth a ton of cure.

Buy it here now!

Forever Free From Chronic Pain: The Pain Sufferer's Guide to Getting Your Life Back

I've spent twenty years seeking information and motivation for people like myself--people challenged by chronic pain. The number of people suffering from chronic pain, worldwide, is so vast it makes any "might happen one day" swine flu pandemic pale by comparison.

Yet sadly, when it comes to chronic pain, traditional medicine focuses on only pharmaceuticals and surgery. If you're not willing to be cut up or drugged into oblivion, they have little to offer.

But now, people who want something more, people that want an actual cure for chronic pain, have hope. Professor/Dr. Rothbart's new book, "Forever Free From Chronic Pain," explains the doctor's groundbreaking work in identifying a common, yet previously unknown source of much chronic pain. That source is a slightly twisted foot, which develops in the fetus during a critical early stage.

Dr. Rothbart has invested more than 40 years of clinical research identifying this source, now known as Rothbart's Foot, and developing a cure for it. His book explains in detail what Rothbart's Foot is, how it develops in the fetal stage, how it affects children and adults and how it can be cured. "Forever Free From Chronic Pain." in written in layman-friendly language, while also providing enough facts and references to satisfy anyone with medical training.

I highly recommend this book to anyone suffering from chronic pain, especially if you've been told to "learn to live with it." If it turns out you are one of the many people born with Rothbart's Foot, there is hope for you! You can read my complete review of this book at my blog, Pain Health News, [...] and read much more about Professor/ Dr. Rothbart and his work on his own web site.

When you've been de-energized and dis-spirited by constant pain, it can be hard to work up the strength and courage to make one more try. But if you've had no help and are running out of hope, read this book. It may open a door for you.

Buy it here now!

Curing Chronic Pain: Stories of Hope and Healing

This book is a "must read" for anyone suffering from chronic pain and/or bipolar disorder or depression. Much of his work is in the area of transforming emotions and pain. This combination book and CD is useful for those who want to get more of a feeling of control around pain.

Specifically, this book teaches you the relationship between attention and pain, softening around pain and having a different experience of it through training the mind to hold it differently. While it won't take the place of morphine, it will certainly help people in pain to live with it more easily. It will also help them to reduce their anxiety around pain, which aggravates the subjective experience of pain.

I am no stranger to pain having gone through a back, neck and wrist surgery. I teach meditation myself and I have graduate education in biology, biochemistry and psychology. I feel I am in a good position to judge the merits of the book and the book certainly has many merits as does the CDs. If you are interested in an introduction to several types of meditation, you might also like The Beginner's Guide to Meditation. If you are quite serious about meditation, you can look at a variety of references on my listmania lists which appear on my profile.

Buy it here now!
I had bought it at the library bookstore after the library discarded it. Eventually, I was so ill, I became bed ridden and brain fog was so bad I couldn't remember much of anything I read. Your book was on the shelf beside my bed along with a highlighting marker and a pen. As I began to read, I remember what Oprah describes today as "AhHa moments". Your book gave me hope. I could only digest a page at a time; I would highlight things which applied to me so I could later show them to my primary care physician. Then I would roll over and sleep; I'd awaken and read another page; then, I'd roll over and sleep some more; and, so it went as I read a page then slept; read another page and slept some more . . . . I was so fortunate to have a physician at the time who would "listen" to me. By now, I was using an electric scooter for mobility each time I visited the VA Hospital in Washington, DC. I was in too much pain and too weak to walk the halls; I looked like a living dead person because I was so pale--colorless. I recall my blood pressure being very low each time it was taken.

I took your book to Dr. RW (my former Primary Care physician-now retired), along with all the page number reference notes I had written inside the front cover; I remember him looking at it briefly and saying, "There are some tests we can run. . . " and he did have many tests done. When we were done, he referred me to a fibromyalgia research clinic being conducted by Daniel J. Clauw, MD, at Georgetown University. They found I had "all eighteen and then some" of the major points. My physician from the Air Force, Dr. Frank R. Lecocq, where I had spent three months hospitalized at Wilford Hall Hospital, San Antonio, Texas, (either 1964 or 1965) had remained in touch with me after we were both discharged from the military; ultimately, he went on to teach at Duke University Medical School until his untimely death from a heart attack on the tennis courts one Saturday. He had spoken to me on the phone that morning and I told him he sounded "tired"; I had no idea he would die later that day and I would never get to speak to him again. * Dr. Lecocq had taught me the importance of finding a physician who would "listen to" me. I've learned what rare gems these skills are in the field of medicine today.

Now, I had a firm diagnosis of something which made sense instead of the long documented, "adrenal hyperplasia, androgenic type, with psychoneurotic reaction". Ultimately, I had that misdiagnosis corrected and revised to the current diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. All of thanks to your very informative book.

This book is a "must read" if you haven't read any books about fibrositis/fibromyalgia. It is a great place to start with information still valid today. The word fibromyalgia wasn't used then.

Thank you, Dr. Davidson, for your book and for giving me the information I needed to help me keep moving forward with living and setting goals for a future.

Buy it here now!

Mindfulness of Breathing: Managing Pain, Illness, and Stress with Guided Mindfulness Meditation

I've been using this CD for about two years, along with the Body Scan and Kindly Awareness, also by Vidyamala and Sona. Practising this meditation with the CD has helped me to live in the present moment, and this in turn has helped me to enjoy life much more. The ancient Greek Philosopher Epicurus thought that the main reason we suffer was to do with thoughts about that past and the future, and that if we could just stay with our present moment experience we would be happy. I agree with him and heartily recommend this CD as a way of doing just that.

Buy it here now!

Embracing Life: Living With Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is pain that doesn't go away. It is pain that undermines the quality of life. It is real pain, not imaginary. At times, it is difficult to pin down a specific physical cause for the pain, this does not lessen the suffering. When we experience any pain, it is in both our bodies and minds. We cannot separate the physical and psychological affects any situation has on us.

Litchfield, Connecticut, resident Lois Pike is a chrnoic pain sufferer who knows too well the deliterious effects of chronic pain on every aspect of her life. She tells her story in her book Embracing Life, Living with Chronic Pain. "The book is written from a patient's point of view; it contains minimal medical facts; rather, the writings chronicle the day to day life of a real patient living each day, continually focusing on the many blessings that I receive," Pike said in a recent interview.

Based on a one-year journey dealing with the challenges of chronic pain while trying to live a full life, Pike's book is written in the form of light poetry that reveals her perspective on her condition. She encourages readers to enter into their own private journey involving chronic pain--be it physical, emotional, or both.

Because chronic pain affects the mind, body and soul, "Writing this book has been a huge factor in my continued healing of body and mind," Pike says. "To quote my friend Susan, 'We are not human beings having spiritual experiences; rather we are spiritual beings having human experiences.' "

Describing her experiences of chronic pain, Pike said, "I and others have learned to acknowledge, accept, and be responsible for living with chronic pain. Adjusting to limitations and a totally different way of life, at times can be most disturbing. The book also highlights that chronic pain and depression are first cousins, an often overlooked and dismissed side effect.

"You have found meaning and purpose through your pain and there are people around who want to read and hear what you have to say," says Louis Donne, Connecticut Community Care, Inc., after reading the book.

The United States cannot effectively address escalating health care costs without addressing the problem of chronic diseases, according to the Center for Disease Control, which reports that more than 90 million Americans live with chronic illnesses. The medical care costs of people with chronic diseases account for more than 75 percent of the nation's $1.4 trillion medical care costs. Chronic diseases account for 70 percent of all deaths in the United States.

Today, chronic diseases--such as cardiovascular disease (primarily heart disease and stroke), cancer, and diabetes--are among the most prevalent, costly, and preventable of all health problems, according to the CDC. Seven of every 10 Americans who die each year, or more than 1.7 million people, die of a chronic disease. The prolonged course of illness and disability from such chronic diseases as diabetes and arthritis results in extended pain and suffering and decreased quality of life for millions of Americans. Chronic, disabling conditions cause major limitations in activity for more than one of every 10 Americans, or 25 million people.

Buy it here now!

Clinical Pain Management Chronic Pain

The second edition of Chronic Pain now covers a vast scientific and clinical arena, with the scientific background and therapeutic options much expanded. In common with the other titles comprising Clinical Pain Management, the volume gathers together the available evidence-based information in a reader-friendly format without unnecessary detail, and is divided into three parts. The broad coverage under Part One encompasses basic science, including applied psychology, genetics and epidemiology, through societal aspects of chronic pain and disability, to patient assessment, diagnostic procedures and outcome measures. Part Two considers the different therapies available, including pharmacological, psychological, behavioural, interventional and alternative. The increasing focus on chronic pain presents difficulties for the busy practitioner. Patients typically describe a complex pattern of discomfort, disability, and distress, with pain affecting physical, social, and psychological functioning. Clinicians must efficiently condense widely varied symptomatic descriptions into characteristic patterns to permit accurate diagnosis and implement effective treatment. This atlas serves as a useful educational resource for the healthcare provider by providing ready access to characteristic descriptions of common pain syndromes, patient photographs and imaging studies, and evidence-based data summaries from the latest research studies, all presented in easy-to-understand visual formats."Chronic Pain: an Atlas of Investigation and Management" offers a unique and broad-based perspective on the subject, drawing on the resources and extensive clinical experience of anesthesiology, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, and rheumatology. Pain assessment and management is comprehensively addressed by including common syndromes from most body regions and inclusion of medication, non-medication, and interventional therapy options for both nonmalignant and malignant chronic pain. An entire chapter focused on pain management tools for patients provides charting documentation aids and educational patient handouts to facilitate patients' understanding of their individual pain syndrome and a variety of pain management techniques. Extensive use of figures, algorithms, tables, and boxes, along with the patient educational materials, makes this book an invaluable chronic pain reference as well as a practical resource for daily clinical practice.

Buy it here now!

Chronic Pain: A Primary Care Guide to Practical Management (Current Clinical Practice)

It was wonderful to see this book come into print. It has proved to be an invaluable resource to me when confronted with the weekly patient that just does not quite fit the mold. This series has a goal of providing practical approaches to common problems. This book fits perfectly into that niche.
It is insightful and has distilled the diagnosis and treatment of common pain complaints into practical, relevent and easily applicable information for the busy practitioner. From Chapter one discussing the epidemiology of chronic pain to Chapter 3 on the pathogenesis of chronic pain this book acts as a succinct and knowledgeable colleague to assist the primary care practitioner in their management of the chronic pain patient.
The book is divided into six sections: Introduction (Chapters 1 and 2), Pathogenesis (Chapter 3), Common Chronic Pain Conditions (Chapters 4-10), Special Groups (Chapters 11-14), Comorbid Conditions (Chapters 15 and 16) and finally a section on Opioids. Further, there are wonderful patient education materials included in the appenidices as well as additional materials that most practitioners will find extremely practical (e.g., a treatment table for the management of headache in Appendix E).
If this were not enough, there is an ebook included with the hard copy that allows one to place the book on their laptop or PDA if so desired. This is truly extraordinary for a book of this type. This allows for the marvelous recommendations and treatment algorithms to be brought truly right to the patient whether that be outpatient or inpatient. I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful text and urge anyone in primary care with chronic pain patients to at least take a look at this text. It is the sine quo non of readily applicable evidence based medicine.

Buy it here now!

Handbook of Clinical Techniques in the Management of Chronic Pain

Aimed at newly appointed consultant anaesthetists expected to run a pain clinic at their hospital, this highly illustated handbook will guide anaesthetists through the many techniques used in the relief of chronic pain. Tearnan, Ph.D. presents 10 Simple Solutions to Chronic Pain: How To Stop Pain from Controlling Your Life, a straightforward guide to the most effective pain management techniques. 10 Simple Solutions to Chronic Pain does not deny the value or unilaterally condemn the use of painkiller drugs, but rather teaches the reader alternative methods that can be used in conjunction with medication, or by themselves. Chapters discuss better ways to communicate with doctors and learn which treatment options are most likely to prove beneficial, enhancing emotional well-being, improving one's sleep, the option of biomedical treatments, changing one's nonproductive beliefs about pain through personal experimentation, and much more. A step-by-step demystification process of pain and one's options for dealing with it, highly recommended.

Buy it here now!

Chronic Pain and the Family: A New Guide (The Harvard University Press Family Health Guides)

"Chronic Pain and the Family" is written for the family and friends of someone who suffers from severe pain all of the time. This is not to say that someone who is in pain won't benefit from this book; it's a book that serves all well and is applicable to all kinds of pain. Despite that, Dr.Silver adresses the important impact that someone's pain has on his family and friends. It is not possible that those who surround a situation are not affected by it in many ways. Why should it be different for chronic pain? Silver's book takes us from the very definition of pain, through all elements of pain, children, teens, the extended family, medication and potential addiction, depression, diagnosis as well as alternative therapy. Dr. Silver is knowledgable about the subject and seemingly still aware that the patients about whom she writes are human. This is an excellent book for anyone who has been in pain or knows someone who has pain.

Buy it here now!

Chronic Pain (Oxford Pain Management Library)

Chronic pain affects millions of patients worldwide and represents a substantial burden to society as a whole. In the UK, chronic pain is the third most common reason for a patient to visit a general practitioner. Poorly controlled pain not only affects patients, it also impinges on the quality of life of carers and can potentially lead to social isolation and family breakdown.
In recent years there have been significant advances in the management of chronic pain, including the introduction of new therapeutic options and an improved understanding of the optimal use of older drugs. Nonetheless, there are several issues that need to be addressed in order to improve the efficacy of treatment, whilst ensuring the risk of adverse effects is kept to a minimum.
Part of the Oxford Pain Management Library, this book succinctly describes the options available for the management of chronic pain, including pharmacological therapies, anaesthetic techniques and complementary approaches.

Buy it here now!

The Mindfulness Solution to Pain: Step-by-Step Techniques for Chronic Pain Managment

Seller was very prompt with shipment and condition of book. For example, I ask myself how I can be in such horrible pain at work and no one around me even notices. Truly frustrated with this dilemma, I picked up a copy of Just Fine: Unmasking Concealed Chronic Illness and Pain by Carol Sveilich to see if I could find some answers.

The book discusses hidden health disorders in a unique way because the author not only offers insights and coping tips offered from physicians and psychologists, including traditional medicine and mind-body medicine. She also has included profiles of people living with a hidden health disorder and she lets them tell their story in their own words, along with their photographs.

What I really liked about the book was being educated about other types of concealed illnesses, and at the same time, how I saw myself in many of the stories. There were common threads of emotions from these people living double lives.

Some of the topics from the book included how to deal with canceling plans, learning how to answer people when they ask how you are, being envious of other people in good health, sacrificing personal goals, making adjustments, and how to respond to people when they question the severity of your symptoms.

I was surprised and relieved to see the author even dealt with the subject of sex with a chronic illness, which I never saw explored before in a book.

This book definitely made me feel not so alone with my double life. It was very comforting and it taught me how to look at people differently, because someone who is smiling in the office might be living with a hidden health disorder like me.

Buy it here now!

Chronic Pain For Dummies (For Dummies (Health & Fitness))

The book was in excellent condition when I received it. Most people would be surprised at such numbers, but for the parents of these children, the challenge of helping a pain-stricken child live a normal life is a frightening and frustrating reality. Chronic pain in children can manifest as abdominal, migraine, or facial pain. It also stems from a wide variety of disorders such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, and childhood cancers. No matter what type of chronic pain the child suffers with, a parent must be armed with an understanding of how a child's expression and experience of pain differs from an adult's.
Trained in pediatric anesthesia and intensive care at Boston Children's Hospital, Dr. Elliot Krane has devoted his entire professional life to refining and innovating techniques, strategies, and therapies to relieve the suffering of children with pain. In his book, Relieve Your Child's Chronic Pain, parents will find the information and tools they need to get the very best care for their child. It will help you:

Recognize, measure, and evaluate your child's pain properly

Learn about the many alternative pain-management approaches that can be used at home

Dispel fears about addiction if your child is prescribed a narcotic

Find an appropriate pain-management clinic for your child

Reduce the stress and anxiety in the home in a way that benefits the entire family

You may not always be able to eliminate chronic pain entirely, but you can succeed in minimizing your child's suffering.

Buy it here now!
I would say there is a limited scope at best. The book assumes for instance that addiction is a separate disease when in fact many patients in pain have co existing addiction problems past or present which clouds the issues inherent in prescribing opiates obviously. Further, there is growing acceptance currently for the theory that "disease" is a term applied to addiction too freely, apparently a trend not limited to outside of this book. Also I note a glaring lack of references. I recall seeing similar discourse and material discussed in several separate magazine articles and web blogs unrelated to this author, pre dating the publishing of this book. Not all original premises but certainly a valiant attempt to have an all inclusive resource.

Buy it here now!

Understanding Chronic Pain: A Doctor Talks to His Patients

I met Dr. Cochran several years ago, after going to many doctors all my life, and he was the only one to be able to help me. The man acknowledges that he never quits caring, learning and sharing with the hopes for mankind that there is help.

Buy it here now!

Forever Free From Chronic Pain: The Pain Sufferer's Guide to Getting Your Life Back

Virtually everyone experiences back, leg, head, or other body pain at some point in their lives. Millions of people suffer with chronic pain. Unfortunately, a large number of these individuals are not finding a pain management system that successfully relieves their suffering.

Surprisingly, Dr Rothbart states that the problem for many of these sufferers is actually in their feet, a slight malformation caused in the womb. In fact, many dangerous operations are being done needlessly. Indeed, think of the pain medications being given without ever exploring the real reason for the pain. It's so very shocking, especially given that problem is completely reversible.

Dr. Rothbart began his research in an attempt to understand his own chronic pain. His studies led him to very successful trials not only in discovering continuity in the underlying cause of chronic musculoskeletal pain but also in effective ways of treating this malformation. Dr. Rothbart`s work is absolutely fascinating and truly enlightening.

Buy it here now!

Back Sense: A Revolutionary Approach to Halting the Cycle of Chronic Back Pain

After going to a conference on Psychotherapy and Mindfulness given by Dr. Ron Siegel, I was inspired to get his book. Having developed back problems (muscle spasms/ "my back went out") a year and a half ago, I was very interested in learning about his approach. While regular yoga has been extraordinarily helpful, I still considered my back vulnerable. This book has challenged this mentality. Since reading this book, I have successfully resumed activities that have I been avoiding since developing back pain. I am more aware of how worrying about hurting my back has made me afraid to use my back in certain ways, and am no longer giving into this worry. This book has changed my mindset regarding back pain and my body. This approach is empowering and I strongly recommend that anyone with a history of back muscle spasms read this book and adopt this method.

Buy it here now!

Living Beyond Your Pain: Using Acceptance & Commitment Therapy to Ease Chronic Pain

This is what cutting-edge psychology has to offer for (chronic) pain! ACT practitioners are aware of the life-saving benefits of medical science. If one goes to one's doctor, one always has hope. But, beyond that, what? I've been in and around 'help-land' often enough, to really get into this work. After initial curiosity and disbelief, I even found it gripping. I was quite amazed to realize how my mind struggles in a maze it creates in response to pain. I realized how much energy I waste in a fruitless struggle to get rid of it. The narrative keeps flowing gently, calling for your attention. What is pleasing is that it keeps blending in concepts already treated. Close to real life, it tackles step by step. There is no harm to look at pain. A lot of emphasis, rightly so, is put on 'value-work'. To see what your life is really about. The chapters on mindfulness and 'defusion' are particularly valuable. Defusion is a technique to show you that you are not your what your thoughts say you are. For that matter, what your pain says you are. Don't get me wrong, there's lot's of work to be done. The work on willingness / acceptance is quite something. You apply your own work and it lifts you. Reading this book saves you from searching for authoritive statements to hold on to. It treats you as an authority in your own right. This one is not just another self-help book. The main author, one of the worlds leading pain-experts, has written a very accessible manual. It is based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a rigorously researched and science based therapy. Honest and sincere, it targets a really wide audience. Once I got into it, I couldn't put it down. It shows us that there's so much value in what we are, it's no longer necessary to be defined by pain.

Recommended!

Buy it here now!

The Pain Survival Guide: How to Reclaim Your Life (APA Lifetools)

When chronic pain became my life I thought it was over. Individuals with chronic pain often report that pain interferes with their ability to engage in occupational, social, or recreational activities. Sufferers' inability to engage in these everyday activities may contribute to increased isolation, negative mood and physical deconditioning, which in turn can contribute to their experience of pain.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven effective at managing various chronic pain conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, and tension/migraine headache. My mother the same, and my brother who may not be so bad now had it horrible as a child. So after so many years of visiting one doctor after the other and trying so many types of medicines that it gave me a headache just to sit down and try to remember them all, I got hopeless. I felt as if nothing would work and no one could tell me otherwise. My mother gave me this book and I let it sit there and collect dust for weeks despite being the avid reader that I am. Last night I finally got the nerve to read it since I couldn't sleep and my head was pounding.I must say that it was enlightening, tear bringing, and one of the most uplifting things I have read in years. I could say that after only the first ten pages that I read. I'd recommend this to anyone who has children or teenagers with chronic pain, and maybe even those teens themselves. It doesn't seem to improve your physical pain right away, but the emotional pain of not knowing what to do and feeling hopeless sure does lesson and that's a blessing in and of itself.

Buy it here now!

The Chronic Pain Solution: Your Personal Path to Pain Relief

For over 10 years now I have been a sufferer of chronic, severe, back pain. I've now had 4 surgeries including fusions and now even have a spinal stimulator implanted. I'm 34. I stopped being able to pick up my son at 6 months old. He's now 9 and I can't even sit in a deer stand with him for more than 20 minutes without having to move. I don't sleep, I'm on 5 different medications along with the stimulator. And I've lost count of the doctors and specialists I've had look at me like I had 2 heads and obviously thought I was full of it. There have been many, many occasions where I've chambered a round in my smith & wesson .40 calibur to put a permanant end to my pain. Why? Because I have the next 40 odd years to look forward to increased pain, probably a wheelchair within the next 5 and parades of pills and medical bills. yay me! Officially I've been diagnosed with 'failed back syndrome' which we all know is a catch all meaning 'I don't know what the hell it is'.

However, that said, four things have kept me from pulling the trigger. One is my girl who was also a highschool sweetheart I've known for 18 years and has vowed to fight with me no matter the cost. Two is my doctor in Louisiana. I finally found one that I trust, who believes me and has encouraged me to keep hope and faith and has kept on fighting with me while not accusing me of faking or even second guessing me for a moment. Three is my 9 year old son who now needs his daddy more than ever since his mother and I have divorced (also a biproduct of my pain in part). And last, this book. No it's not a cure. No it doesn't take away the pain or even tell you how to. But it does give you hope and it does show you ways to cope, and live, with chronic pain.

While this book may not be the end all book to have, it's encouraging and it shows you how to put a 'team' together. A man is only as good as the people he surrounds himself with. I've surrounded myself with my girl, my son, and my doctor and with this book in hand, I'll live to fight another day...for now.

Buy it here now!

Reversing Chronic Pain: A 10-Point All-Natural Plan for Lasting Relief

As a person who suddenly came down with a rare illness and had to find ways to cope, I chose this book in my search for books on pain relief. I have purchased many books on the subject with some success, but this one is by far the winner. First of all, Maggie Phillips is empathetic. She doesn't chastise you for not trying hard enough to cope, pitying yourself, etc. She just lays out a tremendous variety of ideas that you can use to try and help yourself have less pain. If you need A LOT of ideas, this book is for you. You can successfully read the book any way you like; skipping around, straight through, doing the exercises or not. No matter how you read it, you will find so many things to try. Some of her ideas take some concentration to understand and follow at first, but plenty are simple to use too. Also, no matter what your variety of pain is, this book would be useful. This is a tremendous book that can really help you. I recommend it without reservation.

Buy it here now!

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain: A Step-by-Step Guide

"You'll just have to learn to live with it." That's what many patients hear when there is nothing else that can be medically done to alleviate their pain. But how is a patient supposed to learn to "live with it?" Where this statement leaves off, Dr. Thorn's book begins. Dr. Thorn's book illustrates how a therapist can help patients with pain to better cope with their suffering, and to go on to live fulfilling lives. This book is aptly named, for it truly does take the reader on a step-by-step journey through the therapeutic process.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is not a comprehensive chronic pain workbook, nor was it intended to be. It does not cover such issues as medications for pain, nor does it cover breathing techniques for pain or insomnia control. Rather, it takes one critically important aspect of pain disorders, how patients come to think about their pain, and deals with the therapeutic process more thoroughly than any other book currently available.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain book is a monumental work on the topic of how pain and suffering are influenced, for better or for worse, by a patient's belief system. Beyond this, this book does an extraordinary job of taking current scientific theory and research about the nature of pain, and distilling from that concrete advice for both clinicians and their patients. This book leaves the reader with the awareness that Dr. Thorn is a master at simplifying complex ideas, and explaining them in a way that even a discouraged patient can understand and benefit from.

Unlike some books, which are scientifically sound but which offer little that is clinically usable, Dr. Thorn's book is eminently practical. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain walks the reader through the types of the beliefs that influence pain, how to assess them, therapeutic strategies, and homework assignment for the patients. This book even takes the additional step of identifying aspects of these assignments that patients are likely to have difficulty with, and strategies for helping patients overcome these difficulties.

Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is organized with sections on theoretical matters, assessment devices with their scoring keys, and therapeutic strategies with actual homework forms. Additionally, there are also sample dialogs illustrating how to present this information, and how the patient might respond.

Dr. Thorn's approach is at the same time sympathetic to the plight of patients with pain, while still offering hope. While never judgmental, she still challenges patients to identify ineffective coping strategies, and to learn better ones. Most health psychologists will have a chronic pain workbook on their shelf. Cognitive Therapy for Chronic Pain is the next step beyond such a workbook, and will be an indispensable addition to even a senior pain professional's library.

Although this book is written as a guide for clinicians who treat pain, this book can also be a useful self-help guide for a motivated patient with pain.

Buy it here now!

Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain: A Survival Manual (2nd Edition)

I am very glad I purchased this book. I am newly diagnosed and this book greatly helped me in understanding the scientific and medical aspects of what is happening to my body with FMS and CMP. I highly recommend this book to others who want to know more about how fibro effects the body at the most basic cellular levels.

I'll be honest; I cried alot while reading this book...but they were tears of relief. It was not all in my head! For more than a decade I have suffered with many of the symptoms; the worst being the fatigue, heightened pain sensitivities, migraines, sinusitis, allergies and unexplainable weight gain which no diet would decrease. I went to dozens of dr's and spend untold amounts of money on diagnostic tools (mri's, xrays, cat scans ect)...all of which were wasted because none of these physicians believed in FMS or could put together the huge list of symptoms.

Many told me to see a psychologist or therapist; which I did but was then told I never needed. Many just flat out could not help me. Finally a rheumatologist diagnosed me with FMS & CFS. This book brings to light the WHY's of the symptoms FMS, CFS and CMP sufferers endure. It also teaches you how to help yourself and your doctors to optimize your results. It provides invaluable knowledge on the underlying factors that contribute and add to FMS. It breaks down barriers of misconceptions and misunderstandings. It also provides the reader with peace of mind and resources in determining the best work enviroments or what steps to take if disability is an unfortunate option.

Thankfully it also addresses the mental, physical and emotional stresses chronic pain causes for both the sufferer and their family.

This book imo, is invaluable for the FMS, CFS and CMP sufferer. The only thing I wish it had more of is the dietary steps needed and foods required to cleanse, detox and purify your body...for long term lessening of symptoms and pain.

More dr's should read this book.

Buy it here now!

Pain Free: A Revolutionary Method for Stopping Chronic Pain

I have been struggling with Runner's knee (patellofemoral pain syndrome) for the past 4 months. 6 doctors and 2 PTs told me, well, it's tough, you probably won't ever really get better even though I have NEVER had any knee issues prior to 4 months ago. A friend recommended this book and I have been doing the e-cises for 3 weeks. I am proud to say that I have reduced the knee pain by at least 90% and each day it feels like an improvement. I am RELIGIOUS about performing the e-cises every day and believe it is paying off. It is the most help I have received and I am VERY aggressive about trying to heal myself. I would absolutely recommend to anyone interested in really healing their ailments. It takes committment because as others have indicated it isn't a 5 minute a day investment. It typically takes me 30 minutes to do the e-cises. Well worth it to get back to running for me.

Buy it here now!
